Duck Migration Map and Report: How to Read One

Every duck migration map is built one of three ways, and each way is blind to something. Here is how to tell them apart, how to read ours, and why a forecast map should have to answer for itself the next morning.

The three kinds of migration map

Before trusting any map, ask what it is made of. The color scale looks the same on all three; what is underneath it does not.

Hunter-report maps

Hunters file what they saw, and the map colors regions by those reports.

What it does well: Nothing beats a real pair of eyes on a real marsh, and a dense report network can call a push the morning it happens.

What it cannot see: It only knows about places someone hunted and bothered to report, it lags the birds by a day or more, and a quiet map can mean no birds or no reporters.

Radar bird-migration maps

Weather radar sees birds aloft at night. These maps read the whole radar network and show where mass migration happened.

What it does well: It watches everywhere, every night, whether or not anyone was out, and it measures the birds themselves rather than a prediction about them.

What it cannot see: Radar is species-blind. On a fall night most of what it sees is songbirds, so it can prove a migration happened without saying whether any of it was ducks.

Forecast maps

A model reads the weather that moves ducks, the freeze line, food and season timing, and scores each area for how likely birds are to move or arrive.

What it does well: It can look ahead. A forecast map lights up a region two or three days before the push arrives, which is when a hunter can still do something about it.

What it cannot see: It is a prediction, and a prediction with nothing checking it is a guess with a color scale. The question to ask any forecast map is what it does the morning after.

How to read the DuckCast map

Each region carries one number from 0 to 10, and the color is the number. Red is a major push underway, orange is strong conditions, yellow is moderate movement, green is stable or staging, and blue means the region has frozen up and its birds have been pushed south. Tap a region for the eight factors that built the score, the upstream stations feeding its freeze line, and last night’s radar read.

The radar check sits outside the score on purpose. It never feeds the number; it grades it. If the model said birds would move and the radar saw nothing lift after dark, the map says so, and a forecast that admits a miss is worth more than one that cannot be wrong.

Common questions

Is there a live duck migration map?

Yes, for the ten states DuckCast covers: North Dakota, Arkansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The map colors each of the 90 regions by its current migration score, rebuilt through the day from live weather, the freeze line upstream, crop progress and hunter reports, and each morning the radar check marks whether birds actually moved over the region after dark. It is not a national map and it does not pretend to be: states the forecast does not model are not painted.

What is the best duck migration map?

It depends on the question you are asking. If you want to know what hunters saw yesterday, a report-based map with a dense network in your area is hard to beat. If you want to know whether a migration happened over you last night regardless of who was out, radar is the only instrument that watched. If you want to know whether to burn a vacation day on Thursday, you need a forecast, and you should hold it to account against something that observes. DuckCast is built as the third kind with the second kind bolted on: a regional forecast, checked every night against NEXRAD radar, with hunter reports feeding the score at the region level. We do not claim it is the best map for every question, only that it is the one that shows its work.

How is a migration report different from a migration map?

A report is the written version of the same information: what moved, where, and what the next few days look like. On DuckCast the report is the score itself, a 0 to 10 number for each region with the eight weighted factors behind it, last night's radar verdict, the 48-hour outlook and the freeze line. Every covered state has a page listing its regions, and every region has a page describing what the forecast watches there. Your state wildlife agency also publishes official survey counts and reports during the season, and those remain the reference for anything regulatory.

Is there a mallard migration map, or is it all ducks together?

DuckCast scores by species where the timing genuinely differs. The map can be switched between mallard, pintail, gadwall, wigeon, green-winged teal, snow goose, each with its own season curve in every state, and the state's default species is the one its hunters actually open on rather than mallard everywhere. Louisiana opens on gadwall, and Texas and Mississippi open on green-winged teal, because the federal harvest survey shows hunters in all three take more of those birds than mallards. Blue-winged teal is the one common duck not modelled: it is gone from every covered state before the regular seasons open, and the September teal guide covers it instead.

How often is the duck migration map updated?

Weather and the score refresh through the day from hourly conditions at every region center and every upstream weather station. The radar check runs on five scans a night per region, decoded from raw NEXRAD Level II volumes, and posts its verdict for the morning. Crop harvest updates weekly in season from USDA figures, and hunter reports appear as they are filed. Nothing on the map is hand-drawn or updated on a human schedule.

Can I get a duck migration map for a state you do not cover?

Not from DuckCast, and we would rather say that than paint a state we have not built. Each state gets its own regions, its own upstream stations, its own radar sites and season and crop curves fitted to it, which is real work that does not copy and paste.
